November 2006

Darren OllieThis past Saturday’s Austin American-Statesman features the most solid piece of pro-skatepark propaganda in recent memory. It’s a great feature story about how skateboarding is something families are doing together and heavily quotes Darrell and Josh Lowrance. The Statesman’s photos also tell a great story. Too bad we couldn’t have had this article come out back when we were trying to convince the City of Austin and Williamson County bond committees to include more skatepark money in those November bond packages…

I can now confirm the tales about great shoe deals abounding at the Round Rock Vans outlet store are true. (more…)

Dave ReynoldsI got back a few days ago from an extended roadtrip to Tyler and then up to visit my Grandmother in Oklahoma. Things were going pretty well with Dave’s skatepark build in Tyler when I left. I have since learned from Dave that his dog, Ruby, was accidentally run over by one of the crew who was driving a minivan at the time. Dave rushed Ruby to the animal hospital emergency room where the veterinarian was able to keep her from dying. Now Dave is confronted with the emotionally wrenching decision of whether or not the doctors should perform a surgery that could enable Ruby to live and walk, but suffer from pain the rest of her life.

So, the other day my cellphone rang and the caller ID pulled up ‘Jimmy F’ from my phonebook. “This will be interesting,” I thought as I picked up the phone. And it was. Turns out Jimmy was teamed up with a friend of mine in Portland and they were preparing to drive out to Lincoln City, OR. to help pour some concrete for a bowl in a guy’s barn. Shawn boneless
Publishing maven, Shawn Rylander, has stepped it up with a photo in the current issue of Thrasher. A mighty deathbox boneless at the Banana Farm. Congrats on the coverage, Shawn! (note: the photo to the left is proof that I found him first.)

Speaking of publishing,  the Onion is now being distributed for free in Austin with localized advertising. Go pick it up at a coffee shop like the Flightpath @ the corner of 51st and Duval. This will be helpful for planning our weekend activities because it seems like Austin has been lacking for event listing resources.

Hondo Skate Park
Folks are organizing in New Braunfels to lobby and fund raise for a public skatepark in the same community boasting the world’s largest water park. Sorry for the late notice, but today at 5:30pm is an organizational meeting for this group calling itself JAWS. Carter has more details on the sk8sa.org site.

Adam Young air to fakieMisty weather be damned. The outpouring of support from the skate and BMX community for Adam Young’s smile manifested its strength on Saturday at the Terrible One ramp complex. Lots of art was snapped up by collectors in a silent art auction. Shawn Rylander released issue 5 of Disposable Camera zine. Tia Carrera rocked the ramps along with skateboarders and bmxers. I talked to Adam yesterday and he said he thinks the proceeds  from the event will be enough to buy him a new pair of clip-on chompers. Joe Rich is a hero for extending this helping hand for Adam.
