February 2007

Word from the Tyler locals and Lonestar Skateparks builder, Dave Reynolds, is that the street course rennovations are complete and it’s open for skating. The city still needs to come back and perform some revegetation before it will look more like a park. Mike from Henderson’s Hometown Skate Shop has posted these photos.

Adam Young backside disaster The Corpus Christi Junior League’s generously-donated public skatepark opened up over the weekend to great fanfare. Something like a thousand people turned up to skate and check it out. Adam Young got his photo printed in the newspaper doing a backside D on the extension, while Bryan Rogers was quoted talking about his run-ins with the Corpus anti-skate police. The local newspaper photog shot these pretty cool photos of the crowd at the opening. She also shot a really cool collection of photos during the construction by Grindline.

Several Austin Skate Notes readers got letters to the editor published in support of the park (Good job Matt & Carter!), but a local fuddy-duddy just got a letter printed yesterday criticizing the city for not requiring helmets at the park. This is just after Joe Sulak’s awesome letter from wednesday where he applauds the new skatepark.

Sadly, I couldn’t attend the opening because I was crawling underneath my house fixing a plumbing leak all weekend. Sorry for the lag in ASN postings. The editorial staff has been busy with work and moving his girlfriend into the ASN headquarters. When I have been able to get away and skate, it’s been quick sundown sessions at Mabel Davis.
Jack slash sunset grind
Jack was out there the other day slashing this grind beneath the setting sun.

A slalom contest is going down this weekend. Ryan has organized a companion downhill contest on Saturday while the Cold Fusion Sizzler 2007 is held on Sunday in San Marcos.

For those who have a live-in lady who has ambitions of making your place all contempotacular, your Round Rock Ikea coffee table probably supports the weight of the new issue of Dwell magazine. On the cover of that magazine this month is none other than Austin’s own, Andy Rihn. Flip through the pages and you’ll see myriad photos of Andy’s kick-ass house and even a bed designed and built by lil’ moot. Oh, that girl on the cover with Andy is named Pearly, and she’s got a bun in the oven put there by her chef husband.
