blades of glorySo today after work, I noticed the drive-in movie theater by the contractor supply store was showing a double feature of Blades of Glory and Norbit. I had no interest in the latter, and a little interest in the former. The commercials on cable tv suggested that BOG was a transparent cash-grab on Will Ferrell’s popularity. I thought it would be a collection of ridiculous scenes mocking figure skating and / or all forms of skating. But it was a Drive In, and I was hooked. (more…)

fullpipe session
Yesterday we took a day-long skate excursion to some of the well-known skate spots around Tulsa. Ziegler pool and the King Pipes. Both were plenty of fun. Here are some photos I shot of the two sessions.

Following up Al Gore’s coverage last week of Michael Sieben is this video story about the Austin backyard ramp scene.

Reports keep coming in about how many awesome free shows were available during SXSW last week. I can’t even begin to relate them, but perhaps the one I am most disappointed to have missed was the renegade show by Best Fwends and Andrew WK near the pedestrian bridge at Town Lake. Mr. WK had organized a scavenger hunt prior to the show, and the winner received $1000.

VANS skate spot promoVans is  making a  splash at this year’s SXSW festival. They’re sponsoring some parties and bringing pro’s to come skate and barbecue at Mabel Davis. Additionally, they’re raising funds to help  support local DIY efforts by the Austin Public Skatepark Action Committee.

For every shoe purchased until the 25th of this month at one of their two Austin-area stores, $5 goes to purchase materials for a DIY skate spot project. The first project will be a simple concrete mini-ramp in Patterson Park. Dave Reynold’s, of Lonestar Skateparks, has provided the construction documents that the city is currently reviewing. More details below. (more…)

Michael SiebenSo you’re sitting there Monday morning checkin ASN to see if there’s any photos of a cajun doing some Hosoi-influenced stunt on a skateboard. Something to get you through to lunch time. Click on the word ‘more’ down below and you’ll be treated to a Michael Sieben feature ‘broadcast’ on CurrentTV. Then go to lunch and don’t come back (to work).

Ryan Rolls into the Round Rock bowl
Every so many years, something comes along that changes things dramatically in our lives. For Dave Chappelle, his life changed when he decided to have Charlie Murphy come on his TV show and tell stories about hanging out with Rick James and Prince in the 80s. Everybody was talking about the segment, shouting “I’m Rick James, Bitch!” to co-workers and probation officers. It was on the sign at the Ritz for months. People purchased $50 million worth of the DVD so they could watch the piece again and again with friends.
