May 2007

A-2 is doing the final dirt work this weekend and planting sod early next week. The park will open by June 2.

The pool and mini bowl construction will have to wait until fall. Grindline has a packed schedule.

PS the June 2nd grand opening has been down graded to a ribbon cutting with the grand opening coming after phase two is done. Fund raiser at the TC is still on w/ BarkHard, Hognose, Roger’s Porn Collection, and the Flash Boys.

The city council dug up the money to do the pool and mini bowl for the San Marcos park. The design is going through engineering and construction will start this summer. Grindline is the builder. Pool will be a very backyardish left hand kidney. The mini bowl is a feature sorerly lacking in Central Texas parks.

SPOSMAC is already working on raising money for the last part of this first park which will be a flow bowl with a big pipe.

Zingo For a long time, it drew people from all across town to delight on its wooden contours. Its carefully crafted transitions generated the perfect amount of speed and scariness to make riding it fun for the experienced as well as the novice. Its design was less a product of sophisticated engineering but more a work of enlightened art.

Feature photos in magazines described it as one of the best of its kind. Hype and word-of-mouth brought even more visitors from around the US and even the world to ride the wooden behemoth. Yet, locals could be found daily stopping by on the way home from work to take just one ride. And maybe another. Oh hell. Another one can’t hurt. Eventually the riders would be sent home at closing time to explain their tardiness to loved ones as best they could. (more…)

Vale of Miscreation
As far as weekends go up here in Oklahoma, this one has delivered some reasonable entertainment. The Admiral Twin Drive In showed Spiderman 3 to a packed lot full of cars. It was doubled-up with an Ice Cube movie called “Are we done yet?” The Admiral rocks. We had a full-on barbecue going off with an ice chest filled with non-3.2 Lonestars. If you’ve seen the movie Rumblefish, the Admiral Twin is featured therein. Spiderman 3 was good, but I’d probably have been happy if they were still showing Grublets on Ice.

Organizers across Texas have scheduled several skate contests to measure people’s transition skills this spring. Corpus Christi looks to have replaced the Velocity Games of yesteryear with an event to be held at the new concrete public skatepark in Cole Park. Travis seems to have finally gotten off the couch and put together the often-talked-about backyard ramp series. Actually, the evidence presented thus far does not support the case that he got off the couch for this. He might have just picked up the cordless phone and called Michael Sieben asking him to design a flyer… Finally, Jimmy Finley is putting together a ramp jam benefit for Donald D sometime in June.

Mike CrumMike Crum’s skate shop in Allen has moved locations slightly. This article in Transworld Business covers the shops move

Lakeway Public Skatepark

Dallas Gorman of Lakeway Parks and Recreation sent me a note describing programs the city is planning to help novice skateboarders learn to ride the skatepark.

Hey, I know a lot of you already know skateboarding, but we have classes available at the SkatePark this year to further skate boarding techniques, skills and skatepark courtesies for sharing the park and avoiding collisions.  Many of you have already met the instructor, Ted Jennings.  He is out at the SkatePark frequently.  He is a skateboarder, a DJ, a producer of short films and a hip hop dancer.  He focuses on getting your balance centered and will help you improve your skills.  I would appreciate it if you guys would spread the word to anyone you think may be interested.  The Beginner Skateboard 1 day workshops are on May 19, June 9, July 14 and August 18.  They are $25 for members of the Activity Center.  ($30 non-member).  Also, there are 2 week long summer camps available this year scheduled for June 4-8 and August 13-17 from 9am-12 noon and cost $150 for member and $175 non member.  Please help us get the word out.

Sign up at the Activity Center at 105 Cross Creek Road or call us at (512) 261-1010.  More information on our website:  www.cityoflakeway.com
