Skatepark of Austin

SPoA closing flyer
The city of Galveston is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony today for its long-awaited concrete public skatepark. Here’s the Galveston design on Grindline’s site. It’s going to sit directly on the beach and will be built strong enough to withstand a hurricane. Mark Hubbard, who’s something of a hurricane himself, will lead the build.

Sadly, the Skatepark of Austin is closing its doors on the 26th. Tomorrow will mark the last old-man’s night in the 69-bowl.

VANS skate spot promoVans is  making a  splash at this year’s SXSW festival. They’re sponsoring some parties and bringing pro’s to come skate and barbecue at Mabel Davis. Additionally, they’re raising funds to help  support local DIY efforts by the Austin Public Skatepark Action Committee.

For every shoe purchased until the 25th of this month at one of their two Austin-area stores, $5 goes to purchase materials for a DIY skate spot project. The first project will be a simple concrete mini-ramp in Patterson Park. Dave Reynold’s, of Lonestar Skateparks, has provided the construction documents that the city is currently reviewing. More details below. (more…)

Shawn boneless
Publishing maven, Shawn Rylander, has stepped it up with a photo in the current issue of Thrasher. A mighty deathbox boneless at the Banana Farm. Congrats on the coverage, Shawn! (note: the photo to the left is proof that I found him first.)

Speaking of publishing,  the Onion is now being distributed for free in Austin with localized advertising. Go pick it up at a coffee shop like the Flightpath @ the corner of 51st and Duval. This will be helpful for planning our weekend activities because it seems like Austin has been lacking for event listing resources.

Adam Young air to fakieMisty weather be damned. The outpouring of support from the skate and BMX community for Adam Young’s smile manifested its strength on Saturday at the Terrible One ramp complex. Lots of art was snapped up by collectors in a silent art auction. Shawn Rylander released issue 5 of Disposable Camera zine. Tia Carrera rocked the ramps along with skateboarders and bmxers. I talked to Adam yesterday and he said he thinks the proceeds  from the event will be enough to buy him a new pair of clip-on chompers. Joe Rich is a hero for extending this helping hand for Adam.

Smithville public skateparkThis weekend is shaping up to be a whirlwind of philanthropy. I’ll be riding my 1986 Peugot 10-speed in the MS 150 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi raising $300 for Muscular Dystrophy. If you’re interested in helping to sponsor my ride, (tax-deductible) donations of all sizes are greatly appreciated. Shoot me an email – seth[at]austinskatenotes.org
