Earlier this evening I battled rush-hour traffic to attend a meeting of the Round Rock City Council. I joined forces with James Juneau and Darrell Lowrance to advocate for skateboarding. The city council members seemed very receptive to our input and we were invited to further discuss the matter in the hallway with the Assistant Director of RR PARD. As we walked out, a police officer gave us a thumbs-up on our presentation.
Everyone we talked to seemed genuinely enthusiastic about doing the right thing to support Round Rock’s skateboarding youth. The next step is to gather up Round Rock skaters in a steering committee to help provide input to PARD as they move forward with the skatepark process. Those interested in participating in this committee should contact Darrell Lowrance @ (512) 388.7204.
Elsewhere in Central Austin, the Terrible One ramp update is complete. Skaters and bikers teamed up to add a spine that connects another halfpipe to the ramp. This creates a new bowl corner and also boasts a 4-foot roll-in ramp. I checked it out on Monday and found it pretty serious. The spine is the largest I’ve ever ridden and I learned real quick there’s no screwing around with it.This new configuration is super-fun, though, and adds ~32.51 new tricks that can be done on the ramp.
Kookstreet called me the other day. He’s still living in Austin. Turns out he gave up on becoming a pro skateboarder because he was hurting himself too much. Now he’s fully immersed in martial arts and is hurting other people. He’s looking for investors to help him launch his own dojo in South Austin.
Rockdale skate jam this saturday
Rockdale is holding a skate jam this saturday. It’s to show support for a public skatepark in that town. There will be a really cool fiberglass pool to skate and all kinds of giveaways from skate companies. Rockdale is about 45 miles east of Austin off of 79. Directions are available at the Rockdale Skatepark website. The idea is to ultimately build a concrete skatepark in Rockdale.

I run the live meetings for RR, and want to say you guys did a great job. I look forward to helping any way I can. If the City wants to be the “Sports Capital of Texas” (http://www.sportscapitaloftexas.com), then they should be looking to promote all sports. I believe they have good intentions, they just need some help understanding skateboarding.
Also, the guy giving you the thumbs up was not just an officer, but the Police Chief Bryan Williams.
