Second skatepark design input meeting enjoys strong turnout

Update: PARD planning meeting is Tuesday, not Monday.
The second design input meeting for the House Park public skatepark was well attended by skateboarders and BMXers. There seemed to be even more people than were at the first input meeting. A lot of the new faces seemed surprised that the design direction emphasizes form over function, but most people seemed happy with the draft presented by Kyle Dion of Canada’s New Line Skateparks. If built to the design presented, this facility would hands-down be the prettiest dedicated skate terrain in Texas.
The money for this project was secured by the dedicated skaters and BMXers who attended the city’s bond input meetings back in 2005. If we could get as many people who showed up to critique the design to come to the Parks and Rec planning meeting this Tuesday, then we’d be able to get five or six more of these facilities scattered throughout the city.

Thanks for the reminder on the meeting.
A pretty park will be really cool,
but where’s the gnar??

I noticed there are different meetings for the various sections of Austin. Does anyone know if it is acceptable to attend meetings in areas you do not live in?

yes, you can attend any of the meetings. might be worth mentioning what part of town you’re from, though, and any connections you have to the area whose meeting you’re attending (i.e., “i live in north austin, but i work in south austin, and would use a skatepark here often after work”).
as for where the gnar is, it’s where you bring it. i’m personally a little tired of watching dudes do below-coping carves on so-called “gnarly” terrain. the design newline is doing for the austin skatepark is a good design, and if you can’t do anything gnarly there, look in the mirror, not at the designers.

yeah there has been enough “GNAR” built in the other parks. we need something a little less “GNARLY”

what carjack is saying is “GNARLY” is what you make it….be it in a small or big bowl or a ditch….at the meeting it was asked about the bowl depth was told it was dictated by were is was being built and the water shed…..

well I’m guilty of the below coping carves but shit I’m not grinding a 5′ bowl with vert. Sounds like this new park could be the best yet.
